Linus Torvalds tells us that "Software is like sex: it's better when it's free.
" - while for many types Digital Rights Management is seen to go against this because it 'unnaturally' stops you from 'grabbing it free' from who ever you like whenever you like - regardless if whether they want to give it free.
Linus also tells us that " you not only have to be a good coder to create a system like Linux, you have to be a sneaky bastard too"
. . . but of course to create a Digital Rights Management system . . . which academics continually tell us is impossible anyway . . . you have to be far, far, sneaker still . . .
In the publishing industry, digital distribution is no longer a question of "if," but a question of "when and how."
It's a whole new world out there. As more and more people are downloading content onto personal computers and portable devices, digital distribution is creating unprecedented new opportunities to distribute and sell your content. You can sell a book one chapter at a time, or allow customers to package content from an online library. You can revise materials inexpensively. Even mass-distribute the first chapter of a book and then enjoy new revenue as customers pay to download the rest. The opportunities are endless and exciting. And Perimele makes it easy for you to publish, distribute, and market your content over the Internet, quickly and effectively.

DIY DRM?
"There is a
widespread tendency of CEOs and investors to seriously underestimate
what is required to make an effective, marketable digital rights
management system.
An effective digital rights
management system is not
something that a company can get a dozen coders to put together in
six months. Typically CEOs and CTOs underestimate the task by two
orders of magnitude and have nothing credible to show when the
customer deadlines arrive. This is an oft repeated story in the
field.
It is a culpable failure of due diligence to base a company strategy
on such a plan."
DRM - Cost Center or Business Enabler?
"The problem I have in discussing DRM is that most people assume it is all about "locking up" content with encryption and restricting access to it. It's a fair misconception, given the case history to date. However, the more enlightened are trying to move away from that and towards an enabling infrastructure, built from a mixture of legal, commercial, and technical tools, that will promote business and improve the consumers lot too. If that sounds too idealistic, then perhaps we should give up on digital commerce altogether. Personally, I think there is much positive work to do. DRM is in its infancy. There have been false starts. I hope that everyone's voice is heard by legislators and standards makers. It won't go away, so let's make it work."
